No layoffs yet! What’s Google really planning in India?

Google is making big changes at its Bengaluru and Hyderabad offices. But it’s not all bad news for employees.

Unlike the mass layoffs seen in other regions, the tech giant plans to redirect its engineering talent to money-making projects. This strategy was revealed in a recent Business Standard report that has caught the attention of India’s tech community.

For engineers, this means a chance to stay with the company—albeit on different teams. However, staff in advertising, sales, and marketing aren’t as fortunate. These departments will likely face job cuts as the restructuring continues.

Google Reshapes Indian Teams: Engineers Move to Revenue Projects

“My colleague got moved to a completely different project last week,” said a Google employee who wished to remain anonymous. “Everyone’s tense but at least engineers have options.”

This approach shows how Sundar Pichai’s leadership team values Indian technical talent while still pursuing cost-cutting measures. Just months ago, Google merged teams in its Platforms and Devices division globally. That shake-up, affecting Android, Pixel phones, and Chrome browser teams, led to both voluntary exits and forced departures.

When contacted, a Google spokesperson offered a carefully worded statement about becoming “more agile and efficient”—corporate-speak that offers little comfort to worried employees.

Tech industry analyst Priya Sharma notes, “Google’s moves in India reflect a careful balancing act. They need to cut costs but can’t afford to lose their engineering talent in a competitive market.”

The full impact of these changes should become clear in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, Google’s offices in India remain filled with uncertainty—employees checking emails nervously and WhatsApp groups buzzing with speculation.

For India’s tech workforce, Google’s restructuring serves as another reminder of how quickly fortunes can change in the industry, even at the biggest companies.
